Lake District Easy Adventure

England

Sept. 15-24, 2008

For several years, members have requested an adventure to the Lake District of England, and it’s easy to see why – with its beautiful scenery, a huge variety of activities to choose from and historic locations to visit, the Lake District has much to offer OTHGI members. We’ll travel from Manchester to the heart of the Lake District, Langdale, where we’ll spend seven nights at The Langdale Hotel. The hotel is in its own wooded site with tarns and a waterwheel, and is surrounded by beautiful and dramatic scenery. The bedrooms have been converted from original historic buildings, some alongside the sparkling waters of the river, others looking onto high fells or nestling in the wooded beauty of the Estate. Our time in the Lake District will include a walk through the locations used in the film “Miss Potter,” and will take in her farm and the fells, tarns and waters that surround it. Beatrix Potter dedicated her later years to preserving the ecology and natural beauty of the Lake District. She worked closely with The National Trust and left them a substantial part of her estate to be preserved as a living landscape. Another day offers the choice of a low-level walk to visit Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage or a high mountain walk “in the path of Wordsworth.” William Wordsworth, who helped launch the Romantic Age in English literature, spent most of his life in the Lake District and left much for future generations to enjoy. Next, a canoe journey up the length of the Coniston Water takes us to Brantwood, the home of author and art critic John Ruskin. Take in a walk around the gardens before heading back to our hotel. We’ll also have a day to really let loose and try out a new activity or enjoy a favorite pastime. Mix and match up to two activities on this action-packed day. A quiet, but challenging time in the woods awaits us the next day. With your GPS in hand, we’ll set off in teams up the Lingmoor fell and around Elterwater for a light-hearted game of geocaching. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to hide and seek anywhere in the world. We’ll meet up at the pub in the afternoon to see which team had the best results. Next we’ll experience some quintessential English activities in Cumbria. Clay pigeon shooting starts our morning, followed by a 4x4 drive in the Lake District. A falconry walk is scheduled for the afternoon, where you’ll get up close to these amazing birds of prey. A unique way to travel to our next venue, we’ll canoe up the River Eden taking in the eight kilmoter stretch as it winds its way through a lovely wooded gorge dotted with sandstone cliffs. This easy trip is appropriate for all levels, making for a fun and beautiful journey. Our lodging is at The Crown Hotel, a grand old building in a village near the historic city of Carlisle. Enjoy a break in the leisure club after our river trip. Our final day will be spent walking along a stretch of the fabulous Hadrian’s Wall, where we’ll visit an ancient Roman fort along the way. Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a stone and turf fortification built by the Roman Empire from AD 122 to 130 across the width of Great Britain.
