Join us on Over the Hill Gang, International痴 summer trip to Alaska for a real Alaskan experience! This return visit to our 49th state is jam-packed with far-north activities.
We値l greet everyone at our welcome dessert reception on arrival day to kick off our adventure. Following our welcome breakfast the next day, we値l take a guided city tour of historic downtown Anchorage, the Anchorage Museum of History and Art and Earthquake Park, including a walk along the coastal trail. This night we値l dine together at the Sourdough Mining Company.
Next we board the world famous Alaska Railroad for a scenic ride to Spencer Lake where, after a short walk, we値l take a float trip among the icebergs, then float down Placer River. The next day we travel to Girdwood for a naturalist-led hike in a rainforest. Keep an eye out for moose and bear! You値l have the opportunity to ride the tram to the top of Mt. Alyeska for incredible views of the Cook Inlet and the Alaska Range.
Then, we値l continue along the scenic Seward Highway to the coastal community of Seward, where we値l stay two nights. Kenai Fjords National Park is our next destination. We値l spend the day cruising the fjords, observing wildlife and glacier calving. Later we値l visit the Alaska Sea Life Center and walk around historic Seward. Next morning we値l sea kayak in Resurrection Bay. After lunch we値l take a short hike for an up-close look at Exit Glacier, before returning to Anchorage for the evening.
The next morning we値l ride the Alaska Railroad north to Denali. As we travel along the Susitna River we値l watch for moose, eagles and Mt. McKinley. Upon arrival we値l have time to visit the Park Visitor Center or take a short hike before our evening at the Denali Dinner Theater. Next morning we depart on a Tundra Wilderness Excursion into Denali National Park, watching for moose, caribou, sheep and grizzlies!
The following day it痴 white water rafting down Canyon Run; then it痴 on to Fairbanks. On the way we値l stop in Nenana to learn about the Nenana Ice Classic, the only legalized form of gambling in the state. Tonight we値l enjoy a salmon bake dinner in Pioneer Park. Today is the summer solstice. You池e in the land of the midnight sun, so you値l want to enjoy one of the many outdoor activities available.
On our last day we値l have tours of Fairbanks and of the University of Alaska Fairbanks museum, and we値l learn about the gold rush heritage and the Alaska oil pipeline. On a cruise down the Chena and Tanana Rivers aboard the Riverboat Discovery, we値l visit a re-created Athabaskan Indian Village. Tonight we say farewell at the historic Pumphouse Restaurant and recall all our memories of our real Alaskan adventure.
