World Class Golf and the Alamo…a winning combination in the Texas Hill Country springtime.
The country's eighth-largest city combines a rich history with a progressive spirit that has helped turn it into a top travel destination. The attractions are as diverse as the population, from the renowned Alamo and downtown River Walk, to the nearly 300-year-old San Fernando Cathedral. Springtime is mild and sunny, perfect to try some of Texas’ best courses.
We will stay at the Westin La Cantera, a luxurious hilltop retreat with six pools, health club and spa services, tennis courts, three hot tubs, and superb golf. La Cantera is ranked in the country’s Top 50 Golf Resorts by both Golf Digest and Conde Nast magazines. There’s something for everyone, but we are there for the golf!
Golf starts and finishes at La Cantera’s two courses, both rated as 4.5-star courses by Golf Digest, and home to the PGA’s Texas Open. The Resort Course has generous fairways and greens, and its most famous hole, nicknamed "The Rattler," overlooks the Six Flags Fiesta theme park. The Palmer Course has hills that produce scenic vistas and challenging swing throughs.
Other courses we will play are all Golf Digest four-star courses and include a wide variety of scenic backdrops and course designs. One of the most unique is The Quarry Golf Club. Carved from a rock quarry, this course features several holes with a 100-foot rock wall along a narrow strip of fairway. The front nine is more links style, with more wind and a few water hazards.
More Texas-like, Canyon Springs Golf Club is a beguiling beauty routed through an old ranch, where natural elevation changes and rolling terrain provide a sense of countryside golf. It's loaded with local flavor, from the ranch-style clubhouse to its history as the last stagecoach stop heading out of San Antonio. On the mid-week lay day, we will take a guided bus tour of the Texas Hill country, visiting Lyndon Johnson’s home country at the height of Blue Bonnet blossom time.
Next, Hill Country Golf Club is an Arthur Hills-designed course which represents precision, target golf at its best. Tree-lined fairways, a variety of hazards and challenging greens prevail. With plenty of cactus, native oak and Texas wildflowers, the course blends in naturally with its beautiful surroundings.
Last is Pecan Valley Golf Club, which has a special feel and is ranked as the 25th best in Texas. From the 800-year-old "Burnt Oak" tree to the peaceful waters of the Salado Creek running through the golf course, it is a throwback to the days of caddies and persimmon clubs. This majestic course, restored in 2001, was the site of the 50th PGA Championship. Come join us, y’all, for a great week in the Heart of Texas to sample wonderful golf, suited to all abilities, in beautiful surroundings. You won’t be sorry.
